A census-designated location, Tubac is seated within Santa Cruz County, and it is known for being one of the small areas in the United States with a population of 949 as of the 2000. Tubac is not a common name for an area, and it is actually a Hispanicized word which means “rotten.” The original name of Tubac was actually “Cuwak” which was later spelt as “Tubaca” until the ‘a’ was dropped from the name. Although quite small, the area is frequently visited by guests who want to check out the artwork of the residents especially since the area is now popularly known as a colony of artists.
